Oh Roku, how I love you

—November 18, 2008

I finally broke down and bought one of those 99 dollar NetFlix players from Roku a couple of weeks ago. And I love it.

Granted, most of the streaming content on NetFlix consists of documentaries, crappy 70s science fiction and Gene Autry shows, but you know what? That’s OK. There’s enough watchable content that it makes the 99 bucks you spend on the thing a no brainer. Let me be clear here: This is not a substitute for renting DVDs from NetFlix, it’s just an addition. If you’re into nature shows, or documentatries and the occasional recent movie you actually want to watch then it gets you through the lull between getting DVDs in. I also find myself watching things that I’d never actually order the DVDs for since if it’s horrible I can watch a few minutes of it and remove it from the queue.  The quality of the streams isn’t bad and buffering is pretty quick.

So yeah, as a 99 dollar supplement to NetFlix and with the rumors of additional streaming services being added (Hulu, oh God please Hulu) I’d say it’s a steal, even if there aren’t that many popular movies available for streaming yet. The content that *is* available is definitely worth it.

Everest Documentary Bingo

—November 8, 2008

I’ve watched far too many documentaries about climbers on Everest and there are so many of them that they’ve nearly become a genre all to themselves. As with any other genre, certain cliches have developed over time. I’ve taken many of these and put them into an Everest Documentary bingo card to alleviate the monotony that comes from watching some of the less original documentaries.

New URL

—November 7, 2008

Since I’ll eventually be using the starblind.net domain for some new projects I’ve decided to move this blog to http://unconscio.us. The old URL should work for the forseeable future, however.

New MacBook Pro

—October 15, 2008

I’ve been waiting for a while for the new MacBooks to come out since Apple hadn’t really updated the line in any significant way since the they were using the G4s in PowerBooks. After the announcement yesterday I decided to pick up a new MacBook Pro to replace my aging one.

Before I get into actually discussing the hardware I just need to say that while I usually love buying things at the Apple store, with the free roaming sales people who can check you out right then and there, it doesn’t work that well for new product releases. A salesman was trying to make a list of people, but you could also try to corral anyone in a blue shirt and get them to help you. Getting on a list and then having to find a salesman anyway made the experience chaotic and frustrating.

Why I Love the iPhone, Reason #2859

—October 13, 2008

Some of the apps are just plain fun: Camerabag uses the iPhone’s camera to simulate a Holga, B&W and other cameras. It’s really well written, and surprisingly fast, considering it’s doing image processing on the iPhone’s processor. It’s the best $2.99 I’ve spent this week. Here’s a picture I took out of my apartment window this morning, followed by the image processed through the Holga filter, followed by the “1974″ filter.
