Back to Work Podcast
I really can’t get over how good the new Back to Work podcast with Merlin Mann and Dan Benjamin is. They’re only one episode in and it’s already one of the most insightful and important podcasts I’ve listened to. Merlin, as always, is on point, cutting through the standard productivity blogger bullshit to get down to how to get things done (hint: you get things done by doing them). I’ve loved his work on You Look Nice Today and it’s great to hear him talk about what he usually gets paid to speak about on corporate campuses in an informal way. Dan is an excellent host, knowing when to talk and when to just step out of the way. I can’t wait to see how it develops in future episodes.

Osaka time lapse
I’d love to do one of these in New York, but I’m scared someone would try to send arrest me under suspicion of terrorism as soon as I set up a tripod.

The art of being alone
When I lived in San Francisco 10 years ago an acquaintance told me the secret of being alone in a large city, which I’d largely forgotten until now. Here it is: Go Outside.
When you’re in an apartment in a large city, you’re constantly aware of the people around you: the neighbors you hear through the vents, the couple upstairs who come home late and stomp around in hard soled shoes, the downstairs neighbors with dogs that have an affinity for squeak toys. All this doesn’t really bother you until you start wondering what the neighbors around you can hear. Do they hear my dogs running? Exactly how loud *do* I walk. Does my affinity for garlic in offend them when I cook?
These worries drift away when you simply get up and leave. A walk through the park or just down the street and suddenly your individuality is gone, you blend into a crowd of people who you know don’t give a shit about you. Depersonalization, you see, is neither a positive or negative, it’s all in how you spin it. Use it to your advantage and you can escape the city while being right in the center of it.

Notes From a Road Trip
Two weeks ago my girlfriend and I loaded everything we own into a rented van, along with our two dogs, and drove from San Diego to Manhattan. We made it in about 4 and a half days, covering 12 states. This is by no means enough time to experience much of anything but here are some notes and recollections from the trip:

New York Trip
It’d been 18 months since I’d last visited New York, far too long by any measure, but I finally got the time to take a redeye out last Sunday and stay for a week with my friends Kathleen and Atom.

Awesome short documentary on sign painters.
I think part of the reason that I hate today’s advertising is the thoughtlessness of it all. Hand painting well thought out artwork on the side of a building comes from an entirely different place and ethos than Verizon ruining the New York skyline with their logo.

Newly acquired: Bedstu Hawkeye Bag
I finally came to terms with needed a daily carry bag for when I’m out and about since I always like to have a camera with me, but my P&S is slightly too large to fit in a pocket. Additionally I tend to find myself carrying small items with me whenever I’m out for a day and it’d be convenient to have someplace to store them as I walk around. I decided to give the Bedstu Hawkeye bag a go as it was on sale at 6pm. Just carrying it around today I’m pretty happy with it. It’s just large enough for the iPad, camera and a few other items, and small and light enough that you don’t notice it while carrying it around. The one problem with it is that the material is very soft so it kind of turns into an amorphous blob while carrying it, but hopefully that goes away with some more use. Overall I’d recommend it.

Skhizein
Skhizein is the story of a man who’s been hit by a 150 ton meteorite and has to adapt to living exactly 91 centimeters from himself.
It’s one of the best shorts I’ve seen in a long time.
